About
What is FIELDS?
The FIELDS program opportunities provide educational and research paths into the growing field of data science, Big Data analysis and data visualizations. Funded by the NASA MIRO (MUREP Institutional Research Opportunity) program, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) partners with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and collaborates with 2-year degree Community Colleges, California State University (CSU) and other regional universities.
Our audience, mostly from underrepresented groups and a majority being Hispanics or Latinas/os, at all educational levels learn from FIELDS in one of the following component programs:
- Members of the public and K-12 students receive education and public outreach presentations;
- High school students enroll our UCR college courses during the summer;
- High school students conduct data science research in internships at UCR during the academic year;
- Undergraduate students conduct data handling, visualization and other STEM field research at UCR during the academic year;
- Undergraduate students conduct data handling, visualization and other STEM field research at JPL during the summer;
- Bachelor’s degree graduates conduct data handling and analysis research internships during the calendar year;
- Master’s degree students conduct research at JPL to fulfill their program requirements during the academic year;
- PhD graduate students conduct research in collaboration with JPL during the calendar year; and
- Postdoctoral Scholars conduct research at JPL throughout the calendar year.

2017 FIELDS Data Science and Visualization Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to provide a general view of Big Data tools and their application and a solid foundation for the analysis of large datasets. Special emphasis would be given to data visualization and exploration, using industry standard tools. At the end of the workshop students will be able to create distributed data analysis applications and to present the results in a meaningful way.
Education
The FIELDS Program offers multiple educational options to students from high school, undergraduate and graduate levels.
High school students can join the Summer Academy courses at UC Riverside under the sponsorship of the FIELDS PROGRAM.
Undergradute and graduate students can join workshops each year, during February and March, which provide a general view of Big Data tools and their application and a solid foundation for the analysis of large datasets. Special emphasis would be given to data visualization and exploration, using industry standard tools. At the end of the workshop students will be able to create distributed data analysis applications and to present the results in a meaningful way.
Informal education is provided through our outreach activities in elementary, middle and high schools. Teachers can submit a request for a hands-on workshop during the call-for-requests period. For information please contact Dr. Mario De Leo-Winkler (mariodlw@ucr.edu).
Successful careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, to a large extent, depend on having the skills to understand, analyze and extract information from large amounts of data. FIELDS trains the next generation of researchers in large-scale data analysis and visualizations through these undergraduate internships.
FIELDS Research Internship at UCR (available for UCR students only)
We offer research internships throughout the year for students focusing on Data Science. Contact us for details and apply online.
FIELDS Summer Internships at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (2017)
The summer JPL internship application will have a deadline later this year (possibly in late November). Keep visiting for activity updates from our summer 2016 interns as they develop.
Grad Fellowships
Open applications:
2018-19 FIELDS Graduate Student Fellowship (Deadline: August 24, 2018)
What is expected of FIELDS Graduate Fellows
- Research in data intensive projects (within any field) mentored by UC Riverside faculty members during the academic year.
- Research in data intensive projects during a summer within the fellowship.
- Collaboration with a JPL staff member during the academic year.
- Development and growth in programming and visualization capabilities.
- Active participation and development in public outreach activities.
- Monthly reports on research developments (due every last Monday of the month).
- Quarterly reports on research developments).
- Active participation (oral presentations and posters) in FIELDS meetings.
